John,
I think you are confusing methods. libvirt.virDomain.create() just takes a
virDomain object while libvirt.virConnect.createXML() takes an xmldesc.
$ python
>>> import libvirt
>>> conn = libvirt.open("qemu:///system")
>>> dom = conn.lookupByName("my-machine")
>>> dom.create()
Should do the trick.
