lwp-5.72 contains a fix that might be relevant:
Requests for some non-HTTP URLs would fail if the cookie_jar
was enabled. The HTTP::Cookies::add_cookie_header now ignore
non-HTTP requests.
The current on is 5.76. Can you try to see if upgrading helps?
