Typing 'cvs update' is enough. The -A switch is for switching to tracking the main tree, which is what you want, but you're already tracking the main tree, so it's not necessary. If you're interested in learning more about cvs I recommend reading the free chapters available on http://cvsbook.red-bean.com.
