icqx.mirabilis.com is for icq clients using an older protocol;
login.icq.com is for clients using the latest protocol. Unfortunately
none of the official licq releases support the latest protocol.

A version of licq that supports the new protocol is under active
development, but if you want to use it, you'll need monitor the
licq-devel mailinglist actively for all the current caveats and
unimplemented features.

I'm currently using the latest official release (1.0.4) and the search
engine appears to be working for me, so you might want to try upgrading
to see if this fixes your problem.

If you find that you have to upgrade many other libraries in order to
satisfy licq's dependencies, you might want to consider upgrading your
entire distribution at once (Red Hat 5.2 is about 3 years old). If
you're on a dialup connection just getting a cheap cd somewhere
(shouldn't be hard) might even be cheaper.
