In markup, there is a difference between "" and \null that is not
documented very clearly.
\fill-line mentions "empty stencil"
\first-visible (issue 4191) mentions "non-empty stencil"
\fromproperty mentions "empty markup" (I think it's an empty stencil, but
don't take my word for it)
\null mentions an "empty markup" (but it's a point stencil, not an empty
stencil)
There might be others. I found these in a quick search.
