this was actually fixed in GIT some time ago, see

the plan is to move asap to GIT on savannah.gnu.org but this still is
pending some technical issues (not in the last place getting GUB to work
smoothly with a distributed VC scheme). I try to put the GIT fixes back
in CVS regularly, but don't do it every hour.
Until that time, please check

before committing any fixes to CVS.
