It's part of the MetaFont support and belongs to texlive. Unfortunately,
I have no
experience of texlive, but if it's similar to teTeX, then it should work
to do something like
texconfig init mf
I'm sure you know that the installation packages available at
www.lilypond.org -> Downloads
should work well on almost all platforms and that you have a very good
reason to compile it
yourself.
