Good.  That should make the range of available solutions much broader.

I'd see the way to approach this as in 3 stages:

   (1) propose the architecture of the solution and present a prototype with a
       "toy" project just so that everyone can try it out from a user
       perspective.

   (2) if people like it, work to get a prototype set up that works with the
       Lilypond codebase.

   (3) if people still like that, do any necessary work like importing issues,
       etc. and switch over to the new system.
