texinfo uses some glyphs from the EC family, in particular
non-typewriter braces.  A comment from texinfo.tex:

  % @{ @} @lbracechar{} @rbracechar{} all generate brace characters.   
  % Unless we're in typewriter, use \ecfont because the CM text fonts do
  % not have braces, and we don't want to switch into math.

You have to add the EC fonts to the TeX setup of gub.
