For more insight into the ties and slurs work (beyond what David K. wrote in his last message) it would be good to hear from Janek Warchol. As Urs mentioned, he has worked in this area and could shed some light on it. He has not had as much time for LilyPond since he took on a new job. I'll email him and ask him to join this discussion. It's great to have interest in GSoC from both of you. If you haven't read through this guidelines page[1] yet, I'd suggest doing so.
