It's not that I don't see any benefit at all in superior
typographical output. However, the benefits are tiny in my
view, and they need to weighed against all the other variables
(maintenance, speed, ...)

For sure, typography is more important *in comparison to
those factors* to you than to me (and probably all other
developers).


For example, there are a lot of users who set the `PDFTEX` and `PDFLATEX`
environment variables by default in their environment variables because
they prefer to use, say, XeTeX for all docuents – in LaTeX, there are
*really* differences depending on the engine.


Oh, really? Color me surprised. Are there tools other
than build systems that read those environment variables?
And users set them globally, in spite of the incompatibilities
that exist between the TeX engines?

The TeX world never ceases to puzzle me ...
