So you say you get exactly the same error message?

With this new FontConfig version (and please verify that you really
use it, for example, by checking with `ldd .../bin/lilypond`) it
shouldn't be necessary – as I said, VFs should be rejected. If this
is not the case please send me the output of `lilypond -V ...`
