It seems that “complex” is another name for “irregular”, whereas “mixed” are 
combined meters. In the notation manual quoted before, the first example [1], 
using only a single top-level grouping, is irregular, whereas the second [2] is 
mixed. The third example [3] is mixed between an irregular and a regular meter.
