My question now is what is the best way to create eps using dvips, whenever I run dvips on the .dvi file I get the ugly output.
Please discribe some more details on what you try to do and what problems you see. Also, say what LilyPond version you have and on what platform.
Just a wild guess, have you seen the instructions on what flags to use for dvips at http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Invoking-lilypond-book.html#Invoking%20lilypond-book Even though the instructions are described in the context of lilypond-book, they are just as relevant as soon as you want to use dvips on any DVI file with LilyPond code in it.
