This helps indeed a lot.
On the other hand I'd be interested how to avoid stem merging... NoteHeads are controllable with "\mergeDifferentlyHeadedOn" etc.
Is there any similar function to do the same with stems?

No need for acrobatics here:
{ <g g> <g \tweak duration-log 2 g>2 }
The second chord shows how to have different note lenghts in one chord, which is also helpful with string instruments.
