Dear David, Phil, and Thomas, thanks for your quick replies! I'm surprised that as a newbie, I was able to find a bug in less than 24 hours of using Lilypond. But it's fortunate that it has already been fixed!
I had double-checked that 2.18.2 is the most current version by checking that it is the version described in the documentation: http://www.lilypond.org/website/manuals.html But I had forgotten that there is also an "unstable" release.
