Markup-commands expecting an argument of type markup? are applied to all markups of a markup-list. Like \box or \rotate: \markup \rotate #45 \box { "|" "|" "|" "|" } If you want to have markup-commands like box, rotate etc applied to "the result" of a markup-list, then you have to "transform" this list of markups to a single markup.
