On traditional meantone keyboards with 12 keys per octave, a common way to 
chose the notes are, expressed in iterated fifths:
  E♭ B♭ F C G D A E B F♯ C♯ G♯

One could indicate a note, like A, and from that, get 6 fifths down and 5 
fifths up.
