As a singer, I've used tick marks for ever, but I think the first time
I saw them published where they hadn't been before was in Rutter's
Shepherd's Pipe Carol. Carols for Choirs 2 (the orange book) has
commas, but by 100 Carols for Choirs (the white book), they've become
stylised tick marks. (Same editors and publisher.)

Cheers,
David.
