As a singer, I've used tick marks for ever, but I think the first time I saw them published where they hadn't been before was in Rutter's Shepherd's Pipe Carol. Carols for Choirs 2 (the orange book) has commas, but by 100 Carols for Choirs (the white book), they've become stylised tick marks. (Same editors and publisher.) Cheers, David.
