LilyPond is not an application, but a command-line program.
Older versions of LilyPond came as an application with a simple editor
(LilyPad). Changes in the Apple licensing procedures made continued
distribution of LilyPad impossible.
Frescobaldi is not required. You can use any text editor and a terminal
window to run lilypond (the excecutable command).
But Frescobaldi is the generally preferred way to use LilyPond on a Mac.
