Possibly because of the first reply in the thread, which only has:
(setq auto-mode-alist
(cons '("\\.ly$" . LilyPond-mode) auto-mode-alist))
and lacks "\\.ily$" , whereas …/share/emacs/site-lisp/lilypond-init.el
has:
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.ly\\'" . lilypond-mode))
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.ily\\'" . lilypond-mode))
You need both extensions mentioned explicitly.
