No book on typesetting has ever suggested widening the leger lines away from 
the staff (and to my mind it's ugly).


Vertical alignment of note heads is not mentioned in any book I've looked for 
it in; but all the examples use left-alignment rather than centre-alignment.  I 
can see the appeal of centre-alignment, but in complex music even slight 
departures from the established left-alignment can make fast reading a little 
less certain.  But as I mentioned before, the font has a real effect on this.
