I personally prefer “hanging” footnotes:

The LaTeX package “footmisc” (cf. 
https://muug.ca/mirror/ctan/macros/latex/contrib/footmisc/footmisc-doc.pdf) may 
provide a useful basis for understanding the options/parameters that might be 
helpful in a Lilypond footnote framework.
