From version 2.7.9 you shouldn't need this workaround anymore,
since it's been fixed in lilypond-book.

I just suscribed to this list a week ago and hadn't read any previous
messages.

However, after I read the post mentioned, bingo! That's exactly right
and the solution did work out just fine.
I was worried that I'd have to rewrite everything.

I really wanted the 2.6|7 version among many other things, because of
the \circle command. It's great for
writing rudimments for percussion.

eg: c4^\markup{\tiny \circle "R"} c^\markup{\tiny \circle "L"}.
