I agree that we need a better solution.  Ideally, it would be one that
would have a better connection to the way LaTeX thinks about the
world, but I'd settle for anything that means I don't have to maintain
my script that does your sed.

The problem is that this is not always what you want. Think for example of situations where you include a short snippet in the middle of a line of text or in a table. Then, you don't anything to stick out to the left of the bounding box.
