Would something like: \markup { \override #'(word-space . 0) \line {"(f" \char #252 "r 1 oder 2 Manuale)"} } solve your problem. BTW I don't understand all this unicode business. Most european characters can be accessed within ascii. Why should we have to go to unicode to get them?
