I need to print both
4 = 53 and 4 ~ 4. = 53
...on separate staves. I'm thinking I'm back to my polyphonic
solution above.
One possibility would be to move the mark engraver to the Staff context, and use \tag for the different elements — it's a lot more work, but would definitely solve the problem you have.
