latest Ubuntu comes with version 2.6.27-9 of the Linux kernel. Anyway, the distributed installer has aaaaalways worked for me, so I'd recommend you to uninstall it again, purge any old version and try to install it from scratch. >From your output of lilypond-book I infer that the install did not success, because lilypond comes with a Python inside, if I'm not wrong.
