This works for me: \once \override Staff.SustainPedal #'stencil = #(lambda (grob) (grob-interpret-markup grob (markup "½" #:musicglyph "pedal.Ped")))
You are officially my hero today... this commission needs to get to the players ASAP, and this is one of the last tweaks I really wanted to get in there.
