Hm…are opt/local/lib and opt/local/include to your search path?  Type:

echo $PATH

and if you don't see them, add them to $PATH in .bash_profile.

It's high time I put the vector graphic spanner stuff on git-hub - I'll e-mail 
the list when I've gotten around to it.
