Yes, and it's very painful when LilyPond fails to space the staves
properly.  Unfortunately i cannot post the piece which fails here,
because
- i don't have the rights to post it publicly,
- it's a whole song inside a big framework, and i don't have enough
time to make a tiny example from it.

This may sound surprising, but there are many cases when LilyPond's
vertical spacing could be noticeably improved (i admit that most of
these cases would matter only to a demanding professional engraver).
