I've tried using paired brackets, that doesn't work either. However, the
manual says you don't need paired beam brackets.

Hi,

you always need a _pair_ of brackets.
In your example I can't find a starting "["-bracket.

Not sure, but perhaps
\noBeam
is better here.

P.S.
Please make sure to post a compilable example, with \version
