I would also say the learning manual is the best starting point (after the section about the text input, that you probably already know): http://lilypond.org/text-input.html http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/index.html And I would suggest Frescobaldi as editor, as it gives you menus and buttons to create your scores, which is particularly handy in the beginning. E.g., you can select your voices and layout your score in a dedicated wizard. http://frescobaldi.org I estimate that it needs some days of manual reading and writing of simple examples to understand how it works. But that effort is really worth it, because with some experience, the writing of the input text will be much faster and the results more beautiful than anything else I have seen.
