the solution i posted is the "recommended" way of doing things according to the documentation: http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/snippets/repeats#repeats-volta-text-markup-using-repeatcommands your solution is far more elegant and intuitive (apart from the ,#{ construct).
