Hello all,

When a Staff is populated by \partcombine, it is often difficult to
tell/remember who is playing right after a page-break. (n.b., Unlike percussion
or vocal staves, it isn’t normal practice to change the shortInstrumentName of
a \partcombine-d Staff.)

I’ve seen several scores recently (including the *spectacular* new
Breitkopf/Henle Brahms’ symphonies
http://www.breitkopf.com/inventory/werk/8788?sr.epochen=&sr.isbn=&sr.weltlich=false&sr.query=brahms+henle+symphonie&was=1%2C4&sr.besetzungen=&sr.geistlich=false)
in which multi-instrument staves will include a disambiguating mark where
necessary: e.g. on a Staff with two parts (say, Flutes 1 & 2), a two-note chord
would have no mark, whereas a single line would say “1.” or “2.” or “unis.”, as
appropriate.

What would be required to make Lily do this relatively easily? Would it be a
Scheme engraver? Or [major] changes to \partcombine itself?

Thanks,
Kieren.
