Thanks for the suggestion. I installed the macports version of guile and pointed lilypond-invoke-editor to it, but I still get the same error message. I found that someone else had a similar error message on OSX while doing something else (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3805991/lilypond-mac-os-x-build-issue) and I tried one of the proposed solutions (the library is present in my /opt/local/lib) but it didn't have any effect. At this point I think I will just have to let it go.
