The core line of make-regtest-pngs.sh was quite close to what I wanted. If anyone is interested, this is what finally chose (also using imagemagick): convert old.png new.png -background black -channel red,green -combine \ -fill white -draw 'color 0,0 replace' diff.png Thanks again!
