For Fedora the situation isn't that bad IMO if you stick to the stable versions. The current version in Fedora 20 updates-testing is Lilypond-2.18.0-1 which is quite new. Often even development versions are accepted and packaged in Fedora, which I think is not a good idea.

sudo yum -y --enablerepo=*testing install lilypond

to install.
