This is an unfortunate limitation of \alterBroken--the spanner may not be broken at the time the property is set. It isn't that difficult to rewrite \alterBroken in terms of 'after-line-breaking (and return the default setting as recommended in Difficult Tweaks in the Extending manual); however, I'm not sure how multiple tweaks of the same object could be achieved (outside of allowing the function to take a list of property/value settings). --David
