I had a look to cthugha. Interesting, yes.

Here, at Mandala, we developped something in this spirit (OK
Mind Snooper), which is not a free program. It is used by some
DJ's and clip producers to add some groovy things.
While cthugha only works on sound, we have Real time video
incrustations and animations and ligt show programming bundled
in.
Cthugha can use X11, our product cannot.
Cthugha cannot pilot video, lasers and smoke machines as well as
moonflowers or whatever you need.

It's really mesmerizing! True.
Try it with something like the very old Sweet Smoke album and
fine tune the system. You'll be psychedelzed :-)
Impressive with trance music. Try it with Astral Projection from
Trust in Trace Records (Aurora Borealis)...
Even Tannhauser Overture from Wagner gives something pretty
psyche.
