Well, I thought so, too. After reading fontutils docs for 2 hours, I've
abandoned the project. I'm just not up for it.

Fontutils contains a highly-tweakable utility to convert bitmap font to
vector font. The idea is, you get a scanned image, use one utility to
convert it to a bitmap font, then another utility to convert to vector. 
Probably it's a good idea to make a REALLY BIG bitmap font to keep
quality high. The impression I get from the fontutils docs is that it's
a very time-consuming, labor-intensive process. You have to fiddle with
several commands and write several files before you get to see
anything... I get enough of that with Csound! (aka "the POVRAY of
Sound") 

I was hoping to find a free knockoff of Fontographer or something. If I
had the time/knowledge I would write my own front-end to GNU fontutils
in Tk... which I haven't learned yet... so this is something I will
never get around to. Oh, well.
