Subject: HELP?: Open-source Animator Project: AutoManga AE
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

For a game project I've been working on for some
time now, "The Light Princess", based on the
story by George MacDonald
I have been looking for an open-source "cel"
animation presentation engine and authoring tool.

At least so far, I have not found an appropriate
application. Some decidely non-free options
exist, mostly for Windows only and running in
excess of $300.

So we are setting out to write one. The animation
engine will also be used as the core of an
interactive cinema game engine. The authoring
tool will be based on extending the capabilities
of an existing open-source drawing program called
Sketch:

 http://sourceforge.net/projects/sketch

I have tested this somewhat by using Unix scripting
and various tricks with the Sketch program. The
results (which should give some idea of what the
program should be able to do) can be seen on my
test page:

 http://light-princess.sourceforge.net/Developer/lp.capturetest.html

Most of the development will be in Python, although
the animation engine will probably include significant
parts in C/C++. Obviously other uses, such as writing
an open-source browser plug-in (i.e. like Flash) could
certainly be imagined, though we don't strictly
need this for the game. The output multimedia library
will be "Simple Directmedia Layer" (SDL) with
the "SDL Graphics Extensions" (SGE). See:

http://www.libsdl.org/index.html

If you are interested in designing and/or
programming on this project on either the
presentation or authoring sides, please contact me
at the e-mail address below, or simply contact
the game mailing list:

The AutoManga Animation Engine project itself
will be at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/automanga

and will be under the "Lesser Gnu Public License"
(LGPL).
