The American Chestnut Foundation is selling wildtype American Chestnut tree
seedlings to members of the foundation. I live in a condo and can't plant
the seedlings. Do any of you want some? Each seedling is $7. They send them
out mid-April and you would need to be ready to plant them and to protect
them from deer, etc. Because they are wildtype, these trees will eventually
succumb to blight if they are exposed to it and if they have an injury that
lets the blight infect the tree. But that could be years down the line. The
point of planting wildtype as I understand it is to have lots of wildtype
genome out there to crossbreed with transgenic American Chestnut trees in
the future when transgenic trees receive full approval for planting in the
wild (in a year or two). (Transgenic trees contain a commonplace gene taken
from wheat that enables the trees to survive the blight. They are the best
option for preserving the tree in the long term.)

Anyway, I can buy up to 25 seedlings if people are interested. Let me know!
