A couple of koi notes (from experience):

   - They can slowly grow quite large (up to 3')
   - If the pool is less than 3'-4' deep it runs the risk of completely
   freezing in the winter; either a pond heater has to be added or the koi
   brought indoors
   - koi are relatively 'dirty' fish for their size; some kind of
   filtration is often needed

One interesting fact is that koi kept in ideal conditions can outlive their
owner.
