Are you part of a school, church or other community group looking for a meaningful service project this year? Here’s a great opportunity to help a legal refugee family in need in 2024!
A friend who works with Jewish Family Services of Metro West (JFSMW) asked if I could broadcast their needs for volunteers. Among their many activities, JFSMW helps put refugee families in MA on a path to self-sufficiency with housing, connection to schools and medical care and employment services. You can read more about JFS’s resettlement program here: https://jfsmw.org/immigrant/resettlement/. They will work with any volunteers so you wouldn’t be on your own. They are welcoming a family of 4 from Guatemala on January 18th who have work authorization. They have urgent need for: 1. A small group of people to coordinate and collect furniture donations and help set up the apartment prior to their arrival (most likely an apartment in downtown Framingham). They would help coordinate and lead the group. 2. A small group of people to work together to provide direct volunteer support to the family after they arrive (help with accessing healthcare, education, employment and making community connections). Mostly support navigating systems, getting to know the community etc. Some direct help with things like ESL tutoring if applicable and employment networking if applicable. 3. Individual volunteers to do some of the above (if we can’t get a group) 4. And of course, financial support always welcome, especially to help subsidize rents as the family gets on their feet. They have some $ and could set up a match if a group wanted to do a collection. More families are also on the way from Algeria, Nicaragua, Syria and more…so if the timing doesn’t work now please get in touch.
