Personally, I would propose the following alternative:

1. If it's national or international news, we don't need to discuss the merits
on a mailing list. Nobody is going to have their eyes opened or mind changed
through these arguments. To the contrary, such comments from behind a keyboard
tend to sow resentment and distrust (of our fellow residents in this case) and
weaken the social fabric. It would be up to the LT moderators' discretion when
a topic strays into this territory.

2. If there's a local event, regardless of subject, the mailing list is an
appropriate place to announce it. There's not really any other practical
alternative.

3. If there's an objection to a local event, it seems appropriate to summarily
state on LT that you have serious concerns and invite people to email you
directly if they wish to know more or discuss it further. You might even end
up with enough interest that there's opportunity to host your own discussion
(or even in-person protest!), which could in turn be announced on LT (see #2).

Let's hear it for the plumbers and electricians!

        -P

p.s. Some of us receive LT in digest form, so we can't simply mute particular
conversations.
