Join the Jameson Singers in a call for peace through music at its choral
orchestral spring concert featuring *Ralph Vaughan Williams’* stunning
cantata*, **Dona nobis pacem.*
Vaughan Williams’ arresting masterpiece, written between World Wars I and
II, features words selected from poetry by the legendary Walt Whitman, an
excerpt from a historical anti-war speech, and lines from the Mass and
Bible, all performed by a full choir, two soloists and an orchestra. The
expert joining of musical and textual imagery serves to unite and warn
listeners about the perils of war. Kevin Leong, music director of the
Jameson Singers, calls it “dramatic, tragic and serenely beautiful” and “a
powerful statement against conflict.”
The concert will also include the poignant *Agnus Dei *by *Samuel Barber, *a
work familiar to many as the “Adagio for Strings”—the second movement of
Barber’s String Quartet, Opus 11. Barber adapted the piece as a choral work
full of clashing harmonies coupled with the sweeping, iconic melody.
Other works performed include two contemporary pieces: the meditative and
stark *Da pacem Domine* by *Arvo Pärt, *written in honor of the victims of
the 2004 Madrid train bombings, and the compelling *Dona nobis pacem *by*
Pēteris Vasks*, featuring a powerful organ accompaniment alongside pensive
and lush choral voices.
