I’m struck by some of the responses to my email. Rather than engaging with
whether the FAQs are accurate, several supporters of the project appear
comfortable with the town publishing falsehoods on its website—as long as
the desired outcome aligns with their goals.

Normalizing lies in public discourse erodes trust in institutions and makes
it nearly impossible for citizens to share a common understanding or hold
leaders accountable. When truth becomes optional, democratic
decision-making collapses into manipulation and division, unraveling the
fabric of civil society.

This support would also be easier to take seriously if those expressing it
were the ones bearing the burden. Championing the public interest rings
hollow when the costs are imposed on a few abutters—it begins to resemble
virtue signaling more than genuine conviction.
