All - I said this in an earlier email about the proposed community center
expenditure which we will vote on later this month, but I think it applies more
broadly: right now, unlike any moment within recent memory, we need to be
extraordinarily conservative with our spending. Many have predicted an oncoming
recession, and even those who support the current administration acknowledge
that prices may go up across the board at least temporarily if not permanently.
We are an aging town with no industry to supplement our property tax base. This
is not the moment for us tonight spend unnecessary funds. I would argue that a
new community center, while desirable, is not essential, and nor are many if
not all of the other proposed additions to the budget. We need to tighten our
belts right now, and save every dollar.
