I couldn't agree more.  I had never heard the "red" pronunciation and also
thinking the 'reed' receipt was not exactly logical.  According to AI,
'read receipt' is explained as noted below.

A read receipt is a notification that confirms when an email or message has
been opened and viewed by the recipient. It's essentially a way to know if
your message was actually seen, as opposed to just delivered to their
inbox. Read receipts are often optional and may require the recipient's
consent to send.
